According to the Codex Alimentarius definition, Honey is a natural and sweet substance produced by honeybees from the nectar of flowers or secretions of living parts of plants or faecal material from insects after sucking of living parts of plants. Then the Honeybee collects and transports these materials and combines them with particular materials from its body, and stores them in Honeycombs to be processed.
Honey is classified by the floral source of the nectar from which it was made. Honeys can be from specific types of flower nectars or can be blended after collection.
Apart from above differences, there are three types of Honey in the markets:
1-100% fake Honey, bee has no involvement in its production
2- half fake honey and half natural honey, bees are fed with sugar by beekeepers
3- Pure & Natural Honey, bees have collected nectar of plants and turned it to Honey, so no feeding or additives & flavouring, Pure & Natural Honey is the only Honey has unique medicinal and therapeutic properties.
According to various research, the consumer knowledge for detecting fake Honey from natural and pure Honey is few.
So, informing about the properties of pure & natural Honey in order for the consumers to be able to diagnose pure Honey and adulterated or fake Honey is very important.
Pure Honey means when it claimed on the label or you are told by beekeepers or sellers in the market, that you are getting 100% Honey, without any other ingredients such as corn syrup, or any other additives to reduce the price or give Honey the fake flavour.
Please be aware that “pure” Honey alone doesn’t always tell you much about the varietal or how the Honey is produced, so it’s good to look for more information such as raw or filtered, is the Honey mono-flora or multi-flora, what flavour is it?, is the Honey organic or not etc…to make sure you’re getting all the benefits you can from Honey and choose the best ones according to your taste and budget.
The most important factor is the type of Honey itself, depends on the origin, medicinal properties, the availability and many more elements, different Honeys would have different prices, some types of Honey are very expensive like Manuka Honey and Yemeni Sidr Honey, now that we know what is happening, we can go to the next stage which would mean comparing the same Honey in different forms, Organic Honey is more expensive, also Raw Honey is higher in price than Regular Honeys, Organic & Raw is more expensive than the other types, Filtered & Heated Honeys are cheaper in general, 100% Pure & Natural is more expensive than half fake Honey and half natural Honey, which means bees are fed with sugar by beekeepers.
Physical and chemical characteristics of Honey are effective on its market price. So that characteristics like the scent of Honey, production location and high traction of Honey have positive significant effect on its price.
Appropriate pricing based on quality and richness of Honey is very important factor to protect its quality in next production process years.
Consumers’ willingness to pay, ceteris paribus, for the first two properties of the Honey mean scented fragrance versus free scented Honey and Honey location if it is produced in mountain versus in farms and gardens are showing huge favour toward scented Honey and mountain Honey, these two properties are highly dependent on each other because the quality and variety of mountains flowers is one the main reasons scented and high quality of Honey.
One of the important factors in pricing Honey would be the availability in certain times, sometimes due to different reasons, we have lower production which would result in higher price, so the best thing to do is to try choosing high volume available Honeys to avoid expensive products.
Now that we know how the Pure Honey would be priced in general, needless to say that the same rules apply more or less in Malaysia.
We have some very expensive Honeys in Malaysian market such as Manuka, Yemeni Sidr, Wild Forest Honey, Kelulut and Tualang Honey.
One of the most important Honey in Malaysia both popular and highly medicinal is Tualang Honey, it’s wild poly-floral Honey produced by the giant bee Apis dorsata in huge combs hanging in open space, up on the branches of a very tall tree.
Harvesting this Honey is known as Honey hunting, and it does look like a robbery.
Apis dorsata bees produce a lot of Honey, at one Honey hunting the harvest can be of 140kg.
It is very expensive honey and for example dark black Tualang Honey has $200/kg price tag in the market.
It’s also called trigona Honey, a poly-floral Honey produced by a stingless bee, Geniotrigona thoracica, a very small bee of 3 to 5 mm in comparison to Apis dorsata of 20 mm, which produces maximum 500 g of Honey per year in so-called pots, inside cavities.
This type of Honey has a higher water content around 25% compared to only 18% in floral Honeys. When it is not fresh it has a slightly sour taste, due to fermentation, the sweet-sour, fruity-scented Kelulut Honey, contains a lot more vitamins, minerals, and medicinal properties compare to many other similar types of Honey.
Scientists say that this fermentation increases its antioxidant properties.
Also considered a medicinal Honey, it has numerous health effects and benefits, it is antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-aging and overall, very famous for its medicinal properties.
In average for a good quality pure Kelulut Honey you have to pay 150 to 220 USD per kg which is 10 times a price for regular Honeys in shops across Malaysia.
Boreno Honey is a poly-floral Honey produced locally by Apis cerana, smaller sized local bees from the Sabah Rural Development Corporation Apiary in Kudat, East Malaysia.
The bees collect the nectar mainly from the Forest mangrove or Mangium tree or Acacia mangium trees and flowers.
It’s light amber in colour and has a very high ascorbic acid content probably the highest in all Malaysian honeys.
The price tag for this Honey is around $60 to $150 per kg.
Manuka Honey is a mono-floral Honey produced from the nectar of the Manuka tree, Leptospermum, If the Manuka Flower could grow anywhere, Manuka Honey would not be as rare a natural occurrence. But in addition to a short bloom window, Manuka Flowers are only found in specific microclimates in its native New Zealand, often in the most isolated hills and forests.
This is a main reason for its really high price tag, it has numerous health benefits, its effective for wound healing, relief sore throat, improve digestions and the most important ones which is very strong anti-microbial and antibacterial.
Depend on MGO, the prices for Manuka Honey starts from around $70 t0 $80/kg and can goes up to several hundreds of dollars for 1kg Manuka Honey.
Sidr Honey is probably the most favourite types of Honey Amongst Arabs, Sidr Honey also loved by Muslim, Malaysian love it too and is one of the best sellers in the country.
Sidr Honey is one of the best Honeys in the world for both its taste and its therapeutic virtues.
The most famous Sidr Honey comes from Yemen and some of Sidr Honeys in Malaysia comes from this country, Sidr Honey is sweet with an unparalleled flavor. It is very efficient against liver diseases. It is known to cure skin diseases and diabetes. It is also believed to have aphrodisiac properties.
If you want to know how much is Yemeni Sidr Honey, I have to tell you is very expensive and can start from few hundreds USD per kg and goes up to several thousands USD to the kg.
For Pure and Natural Honey in Malaysia you can find Honeys in the range of $12 to $16 retail price. Over 85% of Honeys in retail shops and markets drop in this category of price.
As I explained before prices of some Honeys can go up to several hundreds or thousands of USD/kg for very rare types of Honey such as Yemeni Sidr Honeys or Manuka Honey, but these are not the kind of Honeys for everyone, and many people never purchase such a Honey in a lifetime.
Sometimes prices are lower in small shops and local markets compare to supermarkets, but be aware that, those Honeys are normally bulk Honey and it is not easy to trust the quality.
