In this article we are going to discover the estimation of Honey price per kg in average specially for most common Honeys in different countries and places in the world, in other word we want to see how much is reasonable to pay for Honey per kg, in order to do that we need to have better understanding about Honey itself and the factors involved in Honey pricing.
According to the Codex Alimentarius definition, Honey is a natural and sweet substance produced by honeybees from the nectar of flowers or secretions of living parts of plants or faecal material from insects after sucking of living parts of plants. Then the Honeybee collects and transports these materials and combines them with particular materials from its body, and stores them in Honeycombs to be processed.
Honey is classified by the floral source of the nectar from which it was made. Honeys can be from specific types of flower nectars or can be blended after collection.
Apart from above differences, there are three types of Honey in the markets:
1-100% fake Honey, bee has no involvement in its production.
2- half fake Honey and half natural Honey, bees are fed with sugar by beekeepers.
3- Natural Honey, bees have collected nectar of plants and turned it to Honey, so no feeding or additives & flavouring, natural Honey is the only Honey has unique medicinal and therapeutic properties.
We are not going to talk about sections 1 & 2, because those are not Honey, they are liquid shape products that are similar to Honey but do not have the medicinal properties and benefits of natural Honey, sometimes even fake Honeys which are also called cooked Honeys, can harm your health, so you are better off avoid such a products in total.
According to various research, the consumer knowledge for detecting fake Honey from natural and pure Honey is few.
So, informing about the properties of natural Honey in order to consumers can diagnose pure Honey and adulterated or fake Honey is very important.
Honey price is mostly depending on its purity and availability.
Physical and chemical characteristics of Honey are effective on its market price. So that characteristics like the scent of Honey, production location and high traction of Honey have positive significant effect on its price.
Appropriate pricing based on quality and richness of Honey is very important factor to protect its quality in next production process years.
Consumers’ willingness to pay, ceteris paribus, for the first two properties of the Honey mean scented fragrance versus free scented Honey and Honey location if it is produced in mountain versus in farms and gardens are showing huge favour toward scented Honey and mountain Honey, these two properties are highly dependent on each other because the quality and variety of mountains flowers is one the main reasons scented and high quality of Honey.
According to various data available, the Honey price in the world is between $5 to $10/kg wholesale exclude tax, promotion and retail margins in most cases, again we have to understand that, these are prices for natural Honey and of course fake Honeys are lot cheaper but is not our subject today.
One of the important factors in pricing Honey would be the availability in certain times, sometimes due to different reasons, we have lower production which would result in higher price, so the best thing to do is to try choosing high volume available Honeys to avoid expensive products.
Different Honeys have different physical and chemical properties; because Honeybees can obtain the nectar use of one or more types of flowers.
Honey price’s subject should be divided to two different sections, bulk Honey and pre-pack Honey.
Please note that all the below mentioned prices are estimation and can be differ to what you see in the market.
Most of bulk Honey’s Price in the world market would be around $5 t0 $10/kg EXW. Of course, as it mentioned before there are very rare and expensive Honeys like Manuka or Yemeni Sidr Honey as well, but the quantity is not that high to affect the average price of bulk Honeys in the world’s market.
Prices of pre-pack Honey depends on the quality of Honey and the cost of manufacturing & packaging, for example 500g pure Honey packed in glass jar would be priced on average $5.5 to $9 retail price (depends on tax amount which are various country to country, margin and promotion).
If we add 10 to 20% to the price of bulk Honey per kg, then we would have an estimation of the same Honey price as pre-pack, please take in consideration that very special packaging and design could cost more which will result in higher price tags on the products.
One important factor to recognise if the Honey you are going to purchase is fake, would be the cheap pricing of the products, as we said before natural pure Honey is minimum $5 to $6/kg upward for the wholesalers and the public price would be at least 30% higher depends on the country and taxation, so if you see Honey priced at $2/kg in the shop, is not pure.
Honey has become a prime target for economically motivated adulteration, being in high demand, and short supply plus being impossible to recognise the different between pure natural Honey vs fake Honey or Honey with additive.
This may involve the addition of cheap-to-produce sugar syrups or other additives to increase the volume of Honey or claiming a false geographic origin or floral source to elevate the retail value or even 100% fake industrial Honey which is not produced by Honeybees.
For Pure and Natural Honey in the world, you can find Honeys in the range of $12 to $16 retail price. Over 85% of Honeys in retail shops and markets drop in this category of price.
As I explained before prices of some Honeys can go up to several hundreds or thousands of USD/kg for very rare types of Honey such as Yemeni Sidr Honeys or Manuka Honey, but these are not the kind of Honeys for everyone, and many people never purchase such a Honey in a lifetime.
Sometimes prices are lower in small shops and local markets compare to supermarkets, but be aware that, those Honeys are normally bulk Honey and it is not easy to trust the quality.
One of the important factors in pricing Honey would be the availability in certain times, sometimes due to different reasons, we have lower production which would result in higher price, so the best thing to do is to try choosing high volume available Honeys to avoid expensive products.
Unlike many consumers mind, Honey sedimentation is not a reason for faked Honey, it is recommended for correcting of Honey consumers mind, proper informing about it to be very useful for preventing beekeepers to heat their produced Honey to avoid sugar handling (sedimentation) that has a lot of side effects on the health and nutritional properties of Honey.
Due to the 12kg of Honey should be consumed by bees to produce one kilogram of natural wax, so it is expected the price of Honey with wax for beekeeper being more expensive than Honey without wax, the consumer wills to pay a lower price for the Honey with wax, then to solve this contradiction beekeeper uses gross wax (paraffin) in many cases.
Different Honeys have different physical and chemical properties; because Honey bees can obtain the nectar use of one or more types of flowers.
